In our last Cyber Legends interview with Arjung Narang, we explored the technology behind Symantec® CBX—how it came together, what problems it solves, and why organizations are increasingly turning to unified security platforms to outpace sophisticated attacks. 

This time, we’re taking a step further behind the scenes to get to know one of the minds behind an industry legacy, whose career has been defined by a simple habit: asking one more question. 

Before product launches, and conference demos, Dominic Djannesari was the kid asking one more question after everyone else was satisfied with the answer. Today, that same instinct helps him tackle one of cybersecurity’s biggest challenges: turning overwhelming amounts of data into something analysts can actually understand—and use to their advantage.  

The kid who wouldn’t stop asking questions 

What were you like growing up? 

“I was always extremely curious, always loaded with questions,” Dominic shared. “I would drive parents, teachers—everyone—insane because I would always ask for more and more and deeper information layer by layer.”

For Dominic, there was never really a final answer. Just another layer to explore. 

What hobbies did you have?

“Competitive rowing,” said Dominic. A lot of it. By the time he was a teenager, he was training up to nine times a week. 

“It taught me a lot about hard work, overcoming challenges, working as a team, and how to keep going even when results don’t come in at the beginning.” 

When a thirst for knowledge meets Carbon Black 

How did you find your way to cybersecurity? 

Before Carbon Black, Dominic spent five years working as a strategy consultant for financial institutions, moving between problems, industries, and teams every few months. 

“It was very interesting to work on these projects,” he said, “but every three to six months I’d have to hand it over to someone else and move on to the next thing.”

He needed something different. “I wanted more ownership—a long term perspective on things.” 

That shift, and an unforgettable quote from a speaker while earning his MBA led him toward cybersecurity and eventually Carbon Black. 

“If you’re a product manager, you have to have complaints about everything you use in your life,” he laughed. “I found myself in that statement.“ 

What are some of your favorite aspects of working at Broadcom?

“My job never gets boring,” said Dominic. “I never come in one day and think, ‘Today is going to be just a standard day.’” 

The biggest highlight of working at Broadcom? The people. “The architects, the engineers, the security researchers, our partners, sales, marketing—everyone’s really engaged in their world.”

That experience shaped how he thinks about security itself: Many of its hardest problems come down to making better connections between tools, teams, and signals.

The art of turning signals into stories

What are the biggest challenges security teams face these days?

“There's three that I can think of. One is the evergreen of cybersecurity, the information overload, where there’s too much data and too many tools, making it harder to get an overhead view and connect the dots” said Dom.  

“Then, there’s the global shortage of cybersecurity professionals, which, combined with information overload, amplifies the fatigue security teams feel.”

The third relates to AI. “Internally, organizations want to use AI but struggle with control and risk. Externally tools like codex are lowering the barrier for attackers, allowing them to attack 100 times the number of targets that they previously could.” 

How does Threat Tracer help analysts connect the dots and better protect endpoints? 

For Dom, Symantec CBX and Threat Tracer are simply the next step in a journey Symantec and Carbon Black started years ago. 

“Carbon Black invented process trees,” he explained. “They’re incredibly useful for understanding what’s happening on an endpoint. But attacks don’t happen on just one endpoint anymore.”

As telemetry expands across endpoints, networks, the cloud, and data, the challenge shifts from collecting information to connecting it. “When an attacker moves through an environment, they don’t stick to one endpoint or one specific behavior. Instead, they touch various endpoints, move through the network, and access different types of data.” Usually, analysts have to piece all these types of telemetry together manually.

Threat Tracer brings it all together visually, while also helping junior analysts make sense of complex incidents—one way CBX helps take pressure off security teams feeling the impacts of the cybersecurity talent shortage.

“We use Threat Tracer as our visual storyteller of that security event,” Dominic said. “It transforms massive amounts of telemetry into something that's more intuitive, interactive, and understandable.”

What’s an aha moment when you’re demoing CBX where people really get it? 

“Investigation Summaries.” Dominic didn’t hesitate, immediately launching into an explanation of the value of well-written summaries that pull disparate signals together into meaningful insights, and then provide guidance on next steps and remediation.

“They can see how all the pieces come together—that’s when it clicks.” And people can immediately recognize its impact. 

“We’re creating proof-of-work for the user so that they can really understand what’s happening, and how,” added Dominic. 

What’s something you wish people would ask you about CBX, but don’t?

For someone who has spent his life asking question after question, Dominic doesn’t find people challenging the CBX story.

“The response has actually been really positive,” he said. “People are already thinking about where this can go next.”

“We’re trying to remove the darkness, to lighten the way and focus the attention of what customer’s teams can do despite the sheer mass of threats that are out there.”
